Here is your premarket gapper watch list for Friday, July 17, 2026, built for day trading. This market news roundup covers the overall direction of today's session and why the biggest premarket movers are gapping, from the Netflix (NFLX) earnings drop to the continued semiconductor and AI selloff in Nvidia (NVDA) and TSMC (TSM), plus the SDOT low float move. Every mover below comes straight from this morning's scan with volume, float, and daily ATR so you can see what is running before the open.

Market Direction and News, July 17, 2026

The tape stays defensive to end the week. Netflix is the headline drag after a disappointing earnings reaction, and the semiconductor and AI names are lower for a second straight session. Stock index futures point lower, led by tech, with growth and momentum names under pressure while safer corners of the market hold up better. On top of that, today is monthly options expiration, which tends to add volatility and can pin or push the indexes around key strikes into the close. The inflation and retail data for the week is already behind us, and it was soft, so today is more about the Netflix reaction, the chip follow through, and expiration flows. Net read is risk off in tech, so respect the weak side and be selective.

Why Is Netflix (NFLX) Stock Down?

Netflix (NFLX) dropped more than 11 percent premarket to a 52 week low after its second quarter report landed mixed. Earnings per share came in a penny ahead at 80 cents, but revenue of 12.56 billion dollars slightly missed the 12.59 billion estimate, and the forward guidance disappointed again. The company narrowed its full year 2026 revenue range to between 51 and 51.4 billion dollars and guided third quarter revenue growth around 12 percent. The stock has now fallen about 45 percent from its 2025 high, and at least one firm cut its price target after the print.

Why Are Chip and AI Stocks Still Falling?

The semiconductor selloff that started with the TSMC reaction is carrying into Friday. Nvidia (NVDA), TSMC (TSM), AMD, Micron (MU), Marvell (MRVL), and Intel (INTC) are all lower again, and the weakness is spreading into the broader AI trade, with CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius (NBIS), Super Micro (SMCI), and Palantir (PLTR) red as well. Crypto linked names like MicroStrategy (MSTR), Circle (CRCL), and the miners are also pulling back. This is a broad risk off move across the high beta parts of the market rather than a single stock story.

Ticker

Context

Options Read

NFLX

Post earnings

The 11 percent drop to a 52 week low means options are repricing sharply after the report.

SPX and SPY

Monthly expiration

Today is monthly options expiration, so large open interest at key strikes can pin or push the index into the close.

NVDA and SMH

Chip selloff

Elevated activity as the semis extend the selloff into a second day.

Options flow shows positioning for educational review only. It is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Past flow does not guarantee future direction.

Economic Calendar, Week of July 17, 2026

It is a quiet Friday for economic data. The main market feature today is monthly options expiration, which can add volatility and pinning into the close. This week's inflation and retail data, CPI, PPI, and retail sales, is already behind us, and all of it came in soft. Next week brings a heavier earnings slate as the second quarter reporting season ramps up.
